{"id":931,"date":"2014-04-12T22:41:31","date_gmt":"2014-04-12T21:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jasminefoundation.info\/?p=931"},"modified":"2017-05-30T12:28:10","modified_gmt":"2017-05-30T11:28:10","slug":"reconsidering-the-transition-paradigm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasminefoundation.info\/?p=931","title":{"rendered":"Reconsidering the transition Paradigm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The concept of transitions has been central to discussions of democratization for more than three decades now. \u201cTransi- tion\u201d has been the primary term used to describe the political changes that typified what Samuel P. Huntington labeled the \u201cthird wave\u201d of democratization\u2014the birth of new democracies in well over fifty countries that has made democracy the most common form of regime in the world today. The heyday of transitions was the 1980s and the 1990s. But by the turn of the twenty-first century, the birth of new democracies had slowed down, partly because so many countries had already become democratic. As a result, political scientists turned their attention to issues of democratic consolidation, and then to the quality of democracy.<\/p>\n<p>In a widely discussed and influential essay in the January 2002 issue of the Journal of Democracy, Thomas Carothers called into question the continuing value of what he called \u201cthe transition paradigm.\u201d For a moment it seemed as if the notion of transition might have become out- dated or at least outlived its usefulness. But with the \u201ccolor revolutions\u201d in the former Soviet Union, and more recently and even more dramati- cally with the regime changes associated with the \u201cArab Spring\u201d and the political opening in Burma, the question of democratic transitions has returned to center stage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a title=\"Transition Paradigm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.journalofdemocracy.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Reconsidering%20the%20Transition%20Paradigm-25-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The concept of transitions has been central to discussions of democratization for more than three decades now. \u201cTransi- tion\u201d has been the primary term used to describe the political changes that typified what Samuel P.
